Our group at UPC has a significant history in working on/with Semantic Web (and related technologies). Specifically our interests are related to: applying Semantic Web concepts to highly distributed applications composed of automatomated components (software agents) for discovery (description) but also specification of precise semantics for the communication between agents. Under framework V the group coordinate Agentcities projects which combined agent (specifically the FIPA Agent standard ¿ http://www.fipa.org) and DAML-OIL / OWL ontologies for deployment of a very large-scale testbed for automated service composition. An example of the scale of the type of demonstration that could be performed can be found at: http://www.agentcities.org/note/00001/. This testbed is currently being reworked using Semantic Web Services technology. Currently the group is active in two projects in the Semantic Web Area of FP6: 1) we are one of the coordinating partners of Agentlink III (http://www.agentlink.org) and sit on the management board, 2) we are members of the ASPIC (Argumentation Components http://www.argumentation.org) project which deals with argument based negotiation methods for the semantic web. We also coordinate a EuropeAid project called @lis technology net (http://www.alis-technet.org) which is engaged in providing teaching materials and environments in new technologies such as Agents, Web Services and the Semantic Web to leading Universities in Latin America. This gives us a useful platform to extend the take up and awareness of Semantic Web technologies.
