The purpose of this research visit was to discuss the general area of automatic, large-scale Ontology Based Information Extraction (OBIE), an endeavour which both the NLP group at the University of Sheffield and DERI Galway are involved in. Human Language Technology in general, and Information Extraction more specifically, can provide the missing link between the natural language of the existing ¿eye-ball¿ web, and the emerging Semantic Web (SW). While conventional Information Extraction (IE) is well understood, the SW requires a more advanced kind of IE ¿ it must scale to the size of the web, and it must be able to process documents with respect to the ontologies that form the basis of the SW.
