View Point

Semantic Web is ready :

Five years after its launch, the Semantic Web project is operational.

Launched five years ago with the purpose to make it possible for  computers to interpret the contents of documents (text, video, audio, etc ) which circulate on the Web, the Semantic Web project is now operational.

This is in any case what the British scientist Sir Timothy Berners Lee announced at a keynote in the recent conference World Wide Web 2006 which was held from 23 to 26 May 2006 in Edinburgh in Scotland. Sir Berners Lee, now 51 years old, is the inventor of the Web and the founder of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), consortium going back to October 1994 and charged to promote the technologies of the Web.

Editorial

One of the objectives of the Knowledge Web Industry e-newsletter is dedicated to promoting greater awareness and faster take-up of Semantic Web technology within Europe in full synergy with the research activity in order to reduce time needed to transfer the technology to industry and so to market. We have established an industry board as an effective communication channel between industry and academia, in order to: understand industry needs and difficulties of migrating Semantic Web technologies to industry; survey and profile the existing ontologies, tools, infrastructures etc.; make recommendations, guidelines and standards to help industry organize, design and implement their migration into Semantic Web technology enabled IT systems; and promote awareness of the added value of the Semantic Web technologies in the increasingly competitive knowledge economy.

Looking forward to your feedback and comments.

ESWC 2006

The 3rd Annual European Semantic Web Conference will be held in Budva, Montenegro from the 11th - 14th June, 2006. It will present the latest results in research and application in Semantic Web technologies (including knowledge markup languages, Semantic Web services, ontology management and more).

ESWC 2006 will also feature a special industry-oriented event on Monday 12th June providing European industry with an opportunity to become even more familiar with these technologies. It will offer a tutorial program, focusing on the latest in Semantic Web technologies.

ESWC 2006 is co-located with a meeting of the Knowledge Web network of excellence. Workshops and meetings of other European Commission 6th Framework Programme projects involved in the Semantic Web and Semantic Web technologies will be able to showcase their developments. ESWC 2006 is sponsored by ESSI (formerly SDK), a group of four European Commission 6th Framework Programme projects known as SEKT, DIP, Knowledge Web and ASG. Collectively these projects aim to improve world-wide research and standardisation in the areas of the Semantic Web and Semantic Web Systems.

Reasoning Web 2006

The Semantic Web is one of the major current endeavors of applied Computer Science. The Semantic Web aims at enriching the existing Web with meta-data and processing methods so as to provide web-based systems with advanced (so-called intelligent) capabilities, in particular with context-awareness and decision support.
The objective of the Summer School Reasoning Web 2006 is to provide a coherent introduction into Semantic Web methods and issues with a particular focus on their usage in bio-health applications.

Research and Industry

One unique aspect of KnowledgeWeb is the close co-operation being built up between leading Semantic Web researchers and Industry Board members interested in becoming early adopters and benefactors of Semantic Web technologies. In the next newsletter we will be reporting on some existing concrete co-operations and demonstrating value of Semantic Web in the enterprise.
